Oppenheimer Blue Diamond Sells For $58 Million!
A brand new record for the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction was set by the renowned Oppenheimer Blue stone, which sold Wednesday for $57.6 million. The previous record was set by Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau, who paid almost $50 million for a 12.03-carat, fancy blue diamond called “Blue Moon” at Sotheby’s last year.
Set in a ring complemented by a pair of smaller trapeze-shaped diamonds, this precious gem is a part of the highly exclusive “Fancy Vivid” category, which is amazing since only about one per cent of blue diamonds actually fall into this classification. The Oppenheimer Blue, at 14.62 carats, is the largest fancy vivid blue diamond to be auctioned and was estimated to be worth as much as $46 million.
The stone got its name from the late Sir Philip Oppenheimer, who long oversaw De Beers mining and had given the stone to his wife.
